Teaching and learning
Cambridge International Examinations is the world’s largest provider of international education programmes and qualifications for 5 to 19 year olds. We are part of the University of Cambridge, one of the world’s top universities and trusted for excellence in education.
The network of Cambridge schools is growing in the USA. Schools value the rigour of Cambridge programmes and qualifications which are recognised by universities and employers worldwide.
We support schools to develop learners who are confident, responsible, reflective, innovative and engaged. We provide extensive support for teachers, including training and professional development, a secure support website, and curriculum resources.
For primary schools we offer Cambridge Primary which develops skills in English, mathematics and science. It includes curriculum frameworks, teacher support materials and external globally benchmarked Cambridge Primary Checkpoint tests. We also offer a computer skills curriculum with project based assessments for learners aged 5 to 14 called Cambridge ICT Starters.
Cambridge Secondary 1
For middle schools, we offer Cambridge Secondary 1 which builds on the Cambridge Primary curriculum frameworks for English, mathematics and science. The programme includes teacher support materials and Cambridge Checkpoint tests in each subject. These tests are marked by Cambridge and provide evidence of readiness for the next stage of education.
Cambridge Secondary 2
The Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (Cambridge IGCSE) curriculum is for students in grades 9 and 10, and is available in over 70 subjects. Cambridge IGCSE (called ‘pre-AICE’ in some states) is a rigorous international curriculum and examination programme which encourages student-centred and enquiry-based approaches to learning.
Cambridge IGCSE develops skills in writing, creative thinking, scientific enquiry and problem solving. The programme includes the curriculum, teacher support materials and external assessments which are internationally standardised. It is ideal preparation for the next stage in the Cambridge education continuum for high school students.
Cambridge International Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced (A) Level programmes are designed for advanced academic students. They are available in 55 subjects and can lead to the award of a Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Diploma. The Cambridge AICE Diploma programme was successfully piloted for three years in Florida where it continues to receive legislative support and funding.
Cambridge International AS and A Levels are considered college-level courses of study, and are accepted by universities worldwide. Students passing these examinations may receive up to 45 hours of college credit or advanced standing based on their scores on these examinations from universities throughout the US, and all public universities and colleges in Florida. Credit is typically awarded based on each subject and examination grade earned.
Cambridge Global Perspectives
We also offer interdisciplinary high school courses and assessments, such as Global Perspectives. Learners develop skills in independent research and critical thinking by engaging with issues of global significance.
At Cambridge International AS Level and Cambridge Pre U, the Global Perspectives curriculum includes the ‘Critical Path’ approach which develops essential 21st century thinking and reasoning skills. Students learn how to deconstruct, reconstruct, reflect and communicate arguments using debates, an extended essay and multimedia presentations.
We asked Alan Ruby, Senior Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, to compare the skills and competencies required by Cambridge International AS & A Level Global Perspectives with those required by the US Common Core State Standards. He looked at both approaches to learning and examined:
Skills development and assessment
Cambridge programmes emphasise the development of higher order thinking skills, oral skills, writing skills, problem solving, real world applications, independent investigative skills, teamwork and international understanding.
Assessment methods include written examinations, laboratory practicals for science subjects, oral and listening tests for languages, and coursework projects. The exams are marked and graded by Cambridge. While teachers are free to develop their own lesson plans based upon Cambridge AICE subject syllabuses, the variety of Cambridge assessment promotes the use of all these methods in the classroom.
Schools must register with us in order to offer our programmes and examinations.
We are working with the National Center on Education and the Economy on their ‘Excellence for All’ pilot programme. It aims to increase the number of high need high students who leave school ready to do college-level work.
‘Excellence for All’ is being piloted in four states. Schools in the pilot can offer Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS and A Level qualifications. The Cambridge IGCSE courses have been aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
