Travel and Tourism is available at Standard and Advanced level of the CIE framework of qualifications, i.e. Standard is equivalent to IGCSE and Advanced is equivalent to ‘A’ level GCE.
A candidate who successfully achieves the Core Module will receive the Core Certificate. Candidates who achieve an Optional Module will receive an Optional Module certificate. Completion of two Optional Modules, together with the Core Module, will result in the complete Cambridge International Diploma (CID) in Travel and Tourism. This applies to both Standard and Advanced levels thus allowing for flexibility in learning and giving candidates the chance to complete the entire CID in Travel and Tourism or those parts they are particularly interested in.
At Standard level the Core Module is assessed by means of a written examination (2 hours), available in May and October each year. The Optional Modules in Marketing and Promotion and Travel Organisation are also assessed by means of a written examination (2 ½ hours).
The Optional Module in Visitor Services is assessed by means of an assignment which enables candidates to demonstrate their understanding of the topic. The pattern for the Advanced level is a 2 ½ examination (in May and October) for the Core and assignments for all the Option modules.
For the Standard Award, the Core Module can be delivered in approximately 80 learning hours, with each Optional Module based around 40 learning hours. For the Advanced Award, 100 hours are advised for the Core and 60 hours for each Option module. However, these figures are only a guide and Centres may structure the delivery of the course to meet the needs of a particular group. This applies to both Standard & Advanced levels.
There are no formal entry requirements for the Standard level CID. Assessments are only available in English and candidates should possess the necessary language skills. For the Advanced level candidates should have achieved the CIE Standard level in Travel and Tourism or Business.
The CID in Travel and Tourism at Standard level is made up of a Core Module and a range of Optional Modules. The Core Module consists of the travel and tourism industry, features of worldwide destinations, customer care and working procedures and travel and tourism products and services.
The Option Modules available are: Marketing and Promotion, Travel Organisation and Visitor Services.
The Cambridge International Diploma in Travel and Tourism is aimed at those who are interested in a career in travel and tourism or in one of many linked service industries. The qualification may also be used by those already working in Travel and Tourism who wish to have their skills and experience recognised and certificated.
