Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme
Tests
The Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme provides a testing structure that measures student, class and school performance. Schools can use the results of the tests to:
- assess student progress – and strengths and weaknesses
- inform further teaching and support learning
- report to parents.
All tests in the Lower Secondary Programme are standardised, providing an international benchmark of student achievement.
Cambridge Lower Secondary Progression Tests
The progression tests provide valid external assessments of knowledge and skills in English, Maths and Science. The tests:
- are available at stages 7 and 8
- are optional (schools can choose which tests to take and at what times or simply follow the curriculum without testing)
- can be used at any point during the year as many times as the teacher requires
- are culturally sensitive without being culture–free, which makes them ideal for use in the international context.
Progression tests are marked by the teacher. Cambridge provides full mark schemes and guidance.
Analysis tool software is part of Lower Secondary. The analysis tool:
- gives teachers detailed feedback on student performance
- allows comparison between individuals and between groups of students
- facilitates the identification of strengths and weaknesses of individuals and groups.
The progression tests are freely available on the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme support website and teachers can download them and make as many copies as they wish for internal school use. The papers will be renewed on a rolling basis.
Cambridge Checkpoint tests
The Cambridge Checkpoint tests can be used independently or can be taken at the end of stage 9 of the Cambridge Lower Secondary Programme. They are available in English, Maths and Science and are set and marked by CIE.
Checkpoint tests provide detailed diagnostic feedback on a student’s strengths and weaknesses in each topic within each subject. Feedback reports show how a student has performed in relation to:
- the curriculum framework
- their teaching group
- a whole school cohort
- previous years’ students
As well as detailed feedback, students receive an attractively presented statement of achievement.
Checkpoint tests are available in May and October each year for a separate fee.
