International education in China a hot topic

20 May 2009

training in China

Yinghao College International Department (YCID) in Guangzhou, China and CIE got together in March to host two days of intense educational activity aimed at Cambridge teachers from the wider region, and heads of schools considering offering an international curriculum to their students.

Teachers from Cambridge-registered centres travelled from across China, South Asia and Asia Pacific to attend CIE’s Stage 1 Professional Development workshop, led by four of CIE's chief examiners; Beryl Fussey (Mathematics), Michael Crundell (Physics), Brian Dyer (English as a Second Language) and Peter Cann (Chemistry).

The workshops were aimed at teachers who are new to teaching Cambridge syllabuses. All who attended found the workshop very useful, and many expressed an intention to attend future CIE professional development courses.

Alex Chen, Director of YCID said: “The teachers from YCID certainly gained valuable knowledge from these expert trainers. I look forward to our teachers participating in CIE professional development courses in the future and hope that we see more events like this happening in this part of the world over the coming years.”

Over 80 headmasters also attended the Headmasters’ Forum on International Education which ran alongside the professional development workshop at YCID. CIE’s China Representative Nie Xiaoyuan and CIE’s New Zealand Representative, Simon Higgins presented highly informative keynote speeches on the increasing need for international education in a changing world.

CIE and YCID were delighted to welcome Ye Zhi Hong, the Secretary-General of Chinese Association of Tertiary Education to the event, and to listen to her powerful and informative speech. Other high profile members of China’s educational establishment also shared their views and vision for the education of China’s young people.

Many headmasters expressed an interest after the event in becoming a CIE Centre.
