Introductory Course AS/A Level Chemistry (9701)

This online self-study course is designed to give you an introduction to Cambridge International AS/A Level Chemistry. It is aimed at teachers who have not yet started to deliver this course or who are new to teaching this subject.

Course content

The course will cover all aspects of the syllabus and will enable you to:

  1. gain insight into the depth of the syllabus content
  2. learn about the resources available from CIE and elsewhere
  3. study the importance of handling, applying and evaluating information
  4. understand the importance of enabling students’ to apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations
  5. learn how to plan lessons that will deliver the course effectively
  6. learn how to use practical sessions to support study
  7. learn how to assess practical skills
  8. learn about relevant teaching styles
  9. learn about summative assessment and formative assessment
  10. learn how performance is assessed in theory and practical examinations.

Course duration and commitment:

This is a self study course so the pace of study is dictated by each participant and will depend on their level of engagement.  It is expected to be around 15 hours of study over 6 weeks.

There are no deadlines for completing each task. The course is designed to be flexible in order to allow for the many demands on teachers' time.  Participation can take place at times to suit the local situation.  Participants have three months to complete the course.

Please note there is no course tutor.   Teachers are encouraged to use the Chemistry forum on the Teacher Support Website to exchange ideas within a community of peers.

Course certification

Participants are expected to complete all tasks and a short exit test to be eligible for a certificate of completion.

Technical requirements

For participation in the online course, the following minimum computer specification is recommended:

  1. A computer with internet access
  2. An up-to-date internet browser with cookies enabled (the courses will not work without cookies enabled)
  3. Preferably Java installed on the computer
  4. Adobe Reader
  5. Access to the Teacher Support Website

The fee is £55 per delegate. The closing date for bookings is 17 August 2012.
