Bridging the gap: preparation for studying science at university

Event type: Conference

Dates: 26 June 2012

Venue: University of Cambridge Department of Chemistry, Cambridge, UK

As part of our commitment to building a Cambridge Pre-U science community, University of Cambridge International Examinations would like to invite you and up to three Year 12 students of physics, chemistry or biology to attend a one-day seminar on studying science in a university environment.

Student sessions

Students can choose a workshop in biology, physics or chemistry. Each session takes place in the lab at Cambridge, led by a university lecturer, reflecting the sort of practical sessions that students might encounter at university.

We want to give students a sense of what studying their chosen science at university might involve, including learning new techniques, investigations in groups, and the dynamic of a typical lab session. They will also have the chance to visit a research lab and look at the equipment they use.

Teacher sessions

Teacher sessions run in parallel to the student sessions. They will focus on ‘Bridging the gap’, exploring the transition from post-16 study to university.

We will look at teaching strategies for overcoming universities’ concerns and preparing students for higher education. There will be a brief introduction to Cambridge Pre-U science courses, developed in partnership with universities and schools.

We will also look at where universities perceive shortcomings in students’ abilities and skills, and areas where they feel students are better prepared.

Teachers will have time to visit the students in their labs.

How to book

Student places are limited by lab space. As such, we can only offer one student place per science subject to each school. We hope you will be able to bring a biology, chemistry and physics student to experience the day. Each student group must be accompanied by at least one science teacher.

There is no obligation to bring a group of students – you are welcome to attend the seminar alone and participate in the teacher sessions.

We will allocate places on a first-come, first-served basis. To book your places, send the name of your student delegates and the name(s) of their accompanying teacher(s), by Tuesday 8 May to our Events Team at:

Email: events@cie.org.uk
Tel: 01223 553371

You will need to make your own way to the Department of Chemistry, Lensfield Road, Cambridge. This is within easy walking distance of Cambridge train station. Alternatively, we can assist with parking arrangements.

We hope you will be able to join us and we look forward to meeting you.
