Introductory Course AS/A Level Mathematics (9709)

This online self-study course is designed to give you an introduction to Cambridge International A/AS Mathematics. It is aimed at teachers who have not yet started to deliver this course or who are new to teaching this subject.

Course content

The course will cover all aspects of the syllabus and will enable you to:

  1. gain insight into the depth of the syllabus content
  2. become familiar with the aims and assessment of the Cambridge International A/AS Mathematics syllabus
  3. understand the assessment objectives of the syllabus
  4. locate CIE resources which will help in the delivery of the syllabus
  5. appreciate the breadth and depth of the curriculum content of the syllabus
  6. be aware of how examination papers and mark schemes are put together for Cambridge International AS/A Level Mathematics
  7. appreciate how mark schemes are applied and what standards are required for Cambridge International Mathematics

Course duration and commitment:

This is a self study course so the pace of study is dictated by each participant and will depend on their level of engagement.  It is expected to be around 15 hours of study over 6 weeks.

There are no deadlines for completing each task. The course is designed to be flexible in order to allow for the many demands on teachers' time.  Participation can take place at times to suit the local situation.  Participants have three months to complete the course.

Please note there is no course tutor.   Teachers are encouraged to use the Mathematics discussion forum on the Teacher Support Website to exchange ideas within a community of peers.

Course certification

Participants are expected to complete all tasks and a short exit test to be eligible for a certificate of completion.

Technical requirements

For participation in the online course, the following minimum computer specification is recommended:

  1. A computer with internet access
  2. An up-to-date internet browser with cookies enabled (the courses will not work without cookies enabled)
  3. Preferably Java installed on the computer
  4. Adobe Reader
  5. Access to the Teacher Support Website
