Introductory Course for Teachers of IGCSE Biology (0610)

An online self-study course designed to give you an introduction to IGCSE Biology. It is aimed at teachers who have not yet started to deliver this course or who are new teachers of this syllabus.

This is an online self-study course, so the pace of study is dictated by each participant. There is no tutor, but teachers are encouraged to use the discussion forum to exchange ideas within a community of peers

The course will cover all aspects of the syllabus and will enable you to:

• learn about the aims of the syllabus and how it will be assessed
• understand the assessment objectives of IGCSE Biology
• make use of the resources available from CIE
• be aware of useful internet sites
• be aware of the CIE endorsed text books available to support the teaching of IGCSE Biology
• understand the need for an appropriate Programme of Study and Scheme of Work
• understand the importance of lesson planning
• appreciate the need for students to be able to apply their knowledge and understanding to situations which might be unfamiliar
• understand the importance of being able to handle information, presented in a variety of formats
• understand the different ways that practical skills may be assessed
• appreciate what practical work is suitable for teaching purposes
• understand summative and formative assessment
• learn how to set and mark a Formative Test
• understand how examination questions are set and marked

Course duration:

Access to the courses will last for 6 months from the course start date. Participants are expected to complete all tasks within the course by the end of this period in order to be eligible for a certificate of completion.

Each course will normally involve a total of 15 hours of study, which should ideally be completed within a timeframe of six weeks. There are no deadlines for completing each task. However, each assignment must be completed in order to progress to the next module. The course environment is designed to be flexible in order to accommodate the various demands on teachers' time

Course registration and fees:

The fee is £35 per delegate. The closing date for bookings is 19th November 2010.
