US015 Bay High School AICE Program graduate, Class of 1999

The flexible and inclusive design of the Advanced International Certificate of Education program has proven to be the perfect foundation for my post–secondary education and my career goals. Thanks to the global AICE program in general and the care and guidance of the Bay High School AICE program in particular, I have enjoyed several academic successes. I will always be grateful to the AICE program for preparing me for the following scholastic hurdles.

I was admitted to the Honors College of Indiana University after graduating from Bay High School. For my junior year abroad, I was selected to attend Oxford University for an intensive, yearlong study of political science. Before leaving for Oxford University, I was chosen to represent Indiana University as the university’s nominee for Harry S. Truman Scholarship program. During my year abroad, I made a number of trips to the United States to participate in the Truman Scholars selection process.

Established by Congress and financed by a permanent trust fund endowment, Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation has as its objective to develop increased opportunities for young people to prepare for and pursue careers in public service. Because every accredited college can nominate up to four students, the Truman Foundation usually receives over 4,000 nominees for the yearly selection. From these candidates, 200 finalists are selected for interviews. Approximately 65 Truman Scholars are chosen–one for each state with more scholars allowed for states of larger populations. Scholars are awarded $30,000 for graduate school to pursue a career in public service. I am proudly the 2002 Truman Scholar for Florida.

Following the Truman Scholars process, I was also the Rhodes Scholar nominee for Indiana University. I was a successful candidate through the semi–finalist interviews.

Representing the Truman Scholars Foundation, I was chosen by the Academy of Achievement to attend the 2003 International Achievement Summit. Hosted in various cities around the world, the Academy of Achievement annually invites 50 men and women of exceptional accomplishments to share their wisdom and experience with ( as the Academy of Achievement calls the students) ‘200 of the world’s most outstanding graduate students from more than 40 countries and six continents’. Students are selected from the Rhodes Scholarship Trust, the White House Fellows program, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Truman Scholars Foundation, and the Marshall and Fulbright Scholarship programs. During the four–day summit, the students are given the opportunity to meet and discuss issues with eminent achievers from every facet of human endeavor. While I am still not sure why I was chosen, this was an experience of a life time.

Finally, I am grateful to AICE for preparing me for my current scholastic hurdle. I am an L1 at HLS – which means my dreams have come true. I am a first year law student at Harvard Law School! Thank you AICE!
