Teaching and learning
We are recognised as an awarding body by Ofqual (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) the UK government's regulator for awarding organisations and regulated qualifications in England. We are also recognised in Wales by Qualifications Wales and in Northern Ireland by CCEA. This recognition demonstrates that Ofqual has confidence in our approach to providing regulated assessments and qualifications that are fit for purpose, wherever they are taken in the world.
We develop our qualifications according to our Code of Practice and the Cambridge Approach. The Cambridge Approach sets out the principles forming the key reference points for the design, administration and evaluation of our assessments. It is intended to reflect the best practice in assessment that we seek to follow as an organisation and to be a practical guide for those involved in the development of new assessments.
It demonstrates international best practice and enables us to lead the assessment debate through the progressive use of the concept of validity. It provides an overarching structure for individual qualifications but is not designed to relate to every aspect. The Cambridge Approach covers the full life cycle of an assessment and will be regularly updated with the latest developments.
Our quality management system is regularly inspected by independent accredited assessors. We have ISO 9001:2008 certification which gives evidence of the integrity of our quality management systems.
We regularly review and update Cambridge programmes and qualifications to make sure they reflect the latest developments in teaching and learning and meet schools’ needs around the world.
In 2016 we commissioned UK NARIC, the national agency in the UK for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications and skills, to carry out in-depth, independent benchmarking studies to compare Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Level to the UK education system. The studies found Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS & A Level to be robust qualifications that are comparable to the standard of UK GCSE and A Level.
